Elon Musk’s xAI is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone app for its Grok chatbot, a move that could position it as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Founded by Musk as an alternative to OpenAI, the company he helped establish but later distanced himself from due to ideological differences, xAI is now readying itself for a significant expansion.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the new app could be released as soon as December, potentially challenging OpenAI’s ChatGPT as both companies race to scale up their respective AI offerings.
At present, users can only access Grok through the X platform, Musk’s social media network, but access is limited to those who subscribe to the service. Citing anonymous sources, The Wall Street Journal also notes that xAI is involved in the development of customer support features for Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Musk’s other company, SpaceX.
As of now, X has not issued any public statement regarding these developments.
While xAI’s Grok chatbot has yet to make its mark with a standalone app, it is not the only AI-driven service on the market. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude already offer both standalone apps and free access to their respective services, which has made Grok’s current model an outlier among leading chatbots.
Musk’s ambitions with xAI are becoming clearer, as the company looks to establish itself as a formidable player in the growing AI space, where competition is intensifying.
The upcoming launch of a dedicated app for Grok would bring xAI more in line with its competitors, offering a user-friendly experience and possibly expanding its reach beyond X’s paid subscribers.
