OpenAI Signs a Content Deal With Future

OpenAI has announced a collaboration with Future, the publisher behind well-known media brands such as Tom’s Guide, PC Gamer, TechRadar, and Marie Claire. This partnership will enable ChatGPT users to access a wealth of news and lifestyle content from Future’s extensive portfolio of over 200 media outlets. As part of the agreement, content will include proper attribution and links directing users to the full original articles.

This deal is part of a broader effort by OpenAI to establish content licensing agreements with prominent publishers. Recent partnerships include collaborations with Vox Media, the parent company of The Verge, as well as News Corp, which owns The Wall Street Journal. Additional agreements have been reached with publishers such as Dotdash Meredith, which produces People magazine, Politico’s parent Axel Springer, The Financial Times, and The Atlantic.

However, not all publishers have been receptive to such partnerships. OpenAI has faced legal challenges from organizations like The New York Times, The Intercept, and a group of Canadian media outlets, including the CBC. These entities have accused OpenAI of copyright infringement in its use of their content.

Future’s integration with OpenAI builds upon the publisher’s previous implementations of AI technology. For instance, Future has already deployed AI-powered chatbots on its platforms, such as Tom’s Hardware and Who What Wear. The new agreement aims to deepen the use of OpenAI’s tools across various operational areas, including sales, marketing, and editorial workflows.

“This partnership enables us to enhance the ChatGPT experience by providing more access to engaging, up-to-date, and reliable information from a range of specialist sources,” said Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer. He emphasized that the collaboration is designed to support both publishers and content creators by leveraging advanced AI technology to broaden their audience reach.

This initiative aligns with OpenAI’s mission to provide enriched, trustworthy content through its AI tools while supporting publishers in adapting to the evolving digital landscape. For Future, the deal represents an opportunity to modernize its content delivery and utilize AI to bolster its operations, ensuring that users receive high-quality, specialized information.
