Instead of the Old Algorithms, Amazon Prime Video Pushes ‘AI Topics’

Amazon is currently testing a new feature for Prime Video that uses artificial intelligence to recommend content categories tailored to users’ interests. Dubbed “AI Topics,” this innovation offers a fresh alternative to the traditional recommendation algorithms used by streaming platforms. If you’re part of the test group, you’ll see curated content groups with labels like “mind-bending sci-fi,” “fantasy quests,” or “thrilling character journeys.” These categories are designed to match your preferences, creating a more personalized viewing experience.

Each AI Topic includes a mix of shows, movies, and even linear channels that align with the chosen theme. Beyond initial recommendations, users can further refine their preferences by selecting related topics within a given category. Amazon describes this process as a way to “discover more content without hitting a dead end,” ensuring that viewers always have new options to explore.

The use of AI in content recommendations is not entirely new—platforms like Netflix have long relied on machine learning algorithms to analyze viewing history and suggest content. However, Amazon’s introduction of AI Topics suggests an additional layer of sophistication in its approach. This move aligns with the growing interest in AI across industries and reflects Amazon’s broader efforts to position itself as a leader in artificial intelligence.

Currently, the AI Topics feature is being rolled out on a limited basis to select living room devices in the United States, including Amazon’s Fire TV. While the feature is still in its testing phase, it demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance user experiences.

This development follows another recent AI-driven feature introduced by Prime Video: AI recaps. Launched last month, these recaps allow viewers to quickly summarize TV seasons, full episodes, or even specific portions of episodes. This tool aims to help users catch up on storylines or revisit key moments without rewatching entire episodes, making it particularly convenient for binge-watchers or those who have been away from a series for some time.

By integrating AI into various aspects of Prime Video, Amazon is clearly looking to differentiate its streaming service from competitors. These innovations not only cater to users’ preferences but also underscore the tech giant’s ambitions to remain at the forefront of AI adoption. As the company continues to refine its offerings, features like AI Topics and AI recaps could set new benchmarks for personalization and convenience in the streaming industry.
