OpenAI has introduced a new feature called “Projects” to ChatGPT, designed to help users organize their work more efficiently while using the AI chatbot. Essentially a folder system, this feature provides users with a streamlined way to manage ongoing tasks and conversations.
As demonstrated in a preview video, the “Projects” feature will appear in the sidebar of the ChatGPT interface. When creating a new project, users can customize its title, select a color for the project’s icon, and upload relevant files. Additionally, users can input instructions to customize ChatGPT’s responses for each specific project. Another handy aspect is the ability to add previous chats to a project, allowing users to keep track of related discussions in one centralized location.
This organizational tool offers a practical solution for managing tasks, making it especially useful for users juggling multiple activities. In the demonstration, an OpenAI team member showcased how “Projects” could be applied to scenarios like organizing a Secret Santa gift exchange or maintaining a home.
For those accustomed to less structured approaches, such as jotting down random notes in apps like Apple Notes, this feature may prove to be a more effective and systematic alternative.
The rollout of “Projects” began today, targeting users subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams plans. OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil stated that free-tier users would receive access “as soon as possible,” while Enterprise and Edu users can expect the feature to be available early in the new year.
This latest feature is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of Ship-mas” initiative, a series of updates and new tools announced over 12 days. Other notable releases in this event include the Sora video generator, ChatGPT’s Canvas view, and the $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription plan.
