On December 25th, Bluesky, the social media app, introduced a festive update by unveiling a new feature designed to enhance user engagement: a list of trending topics. This addition enables users to stay updated on popular subjects within the app’s community.
The feature is easily accessible by selecting the search icon, represented by a magnifying glass. On the mobile app, this icon is located at the bottom of the screen, while on the web, it can be found in the left-hand sidebar. Below the search bar, users will now see sections labeled Trending and Recommended. By tapping on any listed topic, users can explore posts associated with that subject. When tested, some of the top trending topics included “Christmas” and “Nosferatu,” creating a curious yet intriguing blend of themes.
For those who prefer a minimalist interface or simply wish to avoid the trending list, the feature offers flexibility. A small “x” in the upper-right corner allows users to remove the list temporarily. Alternatively, users can disable the feature entirely by navigating to Settings > Content & Media and toggling off the option labeled Enable trending topics.
Bluesky describes this feature as “V1” and indicates that it is currently in its Beta phase, marked as such on the app. The company has expressed a commitment to refining the feature based on user feedback, encouraging those with concerns or suggestions about the appearance of trends beneath the search bar to share their thoughts.
This update reflects Bluesky’s efforts to keep its platform dynamic and relevant by incorporating a widely appreciated feature from other social media platforms. By allowing users to explore trending topics while also providing options to disable the feature, Bluesky aims to balance customization with a broader sense of community engagement.
