Google to Integrate Spotify to Its Gemini AI Assistant

Spotify is now integrating Google’s Gemini Extensions, enabling users to search for and play music with natural language commands through the generative AI assistant. This new functionality was initially discovered in the Google app’s code in June and has started rolling out to compatible Android devices, according to 9to5Google.

With Gemini, users can request music by specifying song titles, artists, albums, or playlist names, or even by mentioning an activity they’re doing. However, the extension currently does not support creating custom playlists or radio stations on Spotify. It’s important to note that if you’ve already connected another music streaming service, such as YouTube Music, you’ll need to specify your desired service in your initial voice or text request. After the first selection, Gemini will default to the service you used last.

Spotify’s new integration with Gemini makes it the second third-party app to support this feature, following WhatsApp, which began offering Gemini support in October.

According to Google’s support documentation for the extension, users must first link their Spotify and Google accounts to enable Gemini Apps functionality. Additionally, users need to activate Gemini Apps Activity, which stores AI queries for up to 72 hours. However, it’s worth noting that the Spotify extension will not work within Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the iOS version of the Gemini app. Currently, the feature is only available in English.

This update highlights Spotify’s push to expand its AI-assisted features, offering users a more seamless way to discover and enjoy music through voice commands. With AI technologies becoming increasingly integrated into daily tasks, such enhancements reflect the trend of leveraging generative AI to simplify interactions and improve user experience across different platforms.
